Introducing Chethaka Senarathne
Chet’s Journey: From Van Nuys to Medicine
Chet grew up in Van Nuys, where he completed high school at Van Nuys Senior High. Later, he transferred to UCLA as a non-traditional student and earned his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry.
Serving the Van Nuys Community
Chet became one of the first patients of Dr. De Silva when the Van Nuys clinic opened. Inspired by the growing patient demand, he volunteered as a medical assistant, supporting staff and patients during a critical time after the pandemic. Having seen the effects of the physician shortage in underserved areas, Chet is motivated to improve access to primary care for his community.
Leadership in the Kids and Teens Foundation
Recognizing his passion, the foundation appointed Chet as Lead Program Coordinator. In this role, he:
Managed student interactions.
Presented the foundation’s mission.
Recruited volunteers and handled legal documentation.
Developed charting guidelines and trained students on clinical workflow.
His leadership allowed students to understand the realities of practicing medicine in underserved communities. Chet believes future physicians must gain experience in diverse neighborhoods to develop cultural awareness and patient empathy.

Now, he is pursuing advanced studies at UCSF to broaden his knowledge of post-translational modifications and their therapeutic potential.
Future Goals in Medicine
Chet is preparing to apply to medical school programs. His ultimate goal is to continue serving the Van Nuys community, bridge healthcare gaps, and mentor future physicians.
